Arrival and departure

  • When should I arrive?

    Arrival is on the Sunday before the course starts. If you wish, you may also arrive on Saturday, but please inform us of this when enrolling for the course, since we will have to charge you additionally for the extra night.

    After you receive the address of your host family/ guest room, please contact them by e-mail in order to introduce yourself to them briefly. Please inform your host family or the owner of the guest room of your arrival time one week before the course begins at the latest.

  • When do I have to leave?

    Departure is upon completion of the course, at the latest however on Saturday morning.

  • Will the SIT also help me to organize the trip?

    If you specifically request it, we can organize a transfer from the airport or the railway station in Stuttgart for you.

Average age

  • How old are the students at the SIT?

    The average age is between 20 and 25 years, from July to August approximately 20 years. The average age of the students in the summer course for teenagers is 15 years.

Payment

  • Do I have to pay a deposit in advance? If so, when?

    When you receive the invoice you will be asked to transfer a deposit of 20% of the amount invoiced to our bank account. The remaining amount must be in our bank account 10 days before the course begins at the latest. Please email us confirmation that payment has been made.

First day of class

  • What do I do on the first day of class? What do I have to bring with me?

    On the first day of class, please report to our foyer at 8.30 am. You will be welcomed briefly and then given a written and an oral placement test. After this you will be assigned to the group appropriate for you. In addition, on the first day you will be given a guided tour of the city after class.

    Please always bring writing materials (pens and notebooks) to class. We will provide the books and all other teaching material required.

Private lessons

  • Is it possible to book private lessons?

    We also provide private lessons upon request. Duration, scope and content will be established in a personal consultation and will be adapted to the specific needs of the student.

Commuting expenses

  • What expenses will be incurred for travelling to and from the language school and my accommodation?

    You will have to pay for public transportation between the language school and your accommodation yourself. You can buy a one day travel pass or a monthly pass available for students (this will be cheaper for you if your course is longer than two weeks). Weekly travel passes are not available in Tübingen. You can buy the monthly pass at the Verkehrsverein der Stadt Tübingen (Tübingen Tourist Office) during the tour of the city on the first day of your course. You will receive a student ID card from us on the first day of your course, and this will entitle you to receive the special student rate.

Leisure activities

  • What can I do in my spare time?

    There are a great many things to see and do in Tübingen, its surroundings and Southern Germany as well, all of which provide an interesting and enjoyable complement to the language lessons. In addition, the SIT organizes a wide variety of leisure, sports and cultural activities. These can be booked here and paid for in cash. All of these activities require a minimum number of participants. The costs for these activities are included in the price of the summer course for teenagers.

Assistance during your stay

  • Whom can I contact if I have problems?

    Should you become ill during your stay at the SIT or have problems with your accommodation or any other problems, our team is always available to help you in any way we can. Please go to the SIT office, room 05 on the ground floor.

Class sizes

  • How big are the classes?

    At most, there are 12 students in each class. As a rule however the classes are smaller than this, but this varies depending upon whether the courses are held in the pre-season, the peak season or the off season. There is a maximum of 15 students in each class in our summer course for teenagers.

Start date

  • Can I start taking a language course at the SIT at any time?

    The language courses at the SIT start every two weeks, and beginners’ courses start six times a year. Please click here for all the start dates of the various courses.

Course/language level

  • Can I attend a course even if I have no previous knowledge of the German language?

    Yes you can, but only on certain dates. The courses for beginners are held six times a year and are marked with a double asterisk ** in our course calendar.

  • Are courses offered for all levels?

    The SIT offers courses for all language levels. On the first day of the course there is a written and an oral placement test so that each student can be assigned to the appropriate class.

  • How can I determine my language level?

  • What is the definition of beginner?

    A beginner is a student with no previous knowledge of the language.

Teaching staff

  • What qualifications do the SIT teachers have?

    Everyone who teaches German at the SIT has a university degree, has received special training to teach German as a foreign language and continues their education in this field on a regular basis.

Nationalities

  • Which nationalities are represented at the SIT?

    Each year we welcome students from more than 40 nations from all parts of the world. Most of them come from Brazil, Italy, Switzerland, Argentina, the USA, Japan ...

Tests

  • Which tests can I take at the SIT?

    The SIT is an accredited test center for TestDaF, OnDaF and Telc. You can thus take tests at every level and for various requirements at our Institute.


Certificate of attendance/Certificate

  • Will I receive a certificate at the end of my course?

    Everyone in the course will receive a certificate of attendance at the end of their stay. If your course is longer than four weeks, you will receive a certificate with marks.

Transfer

  • How do I get to Tübingen from the airport or the main railway station in Stuttgart with my luggage?

    You can book a transfer from the airport or the railway station when enrolling. For further information, please click here (link). We will order a taxi to pick you up at Terminal 1, Meeting Point A at the airport and to take you directly to your host family or guest room. Upon your arrival at the railway station in Stuttgart, our taxi driver will meet you directly at the track carrying a sign saying “Sprachinstitut Tübingen SIT”.

Board

  • Where will I receive my meals?

    If you are staying with a host family with full board, you will receive breakfast and dinner in the family. You will be eating lunch at a restaurant close to the school. External students can book their lunch here when they arrive.

Insurance

  • Will I be insured during my stay at the SIT?

    Neither the SIT nor the host family will be able to provide health insurance, accident insurance or liability insurance for course participants during their stay here.

    We recommend liability insurance in case of any damages caused by the guest for example in the host family or in the guest room. If you require insurance, you will be able to obtain this here. If you are interested, please get in touch with the SIT office in room 05 on the ground floor.

Visa

  • Do I need a visa in order to stay in Germany while taking the language course?

    Citizens of European Union member countries do not require a visa. Citizens of some other countries must apply for a visa before entering Germany (link to Federal Foreign Office). The formalities to be handled and the deadlines to be observed vary from country to country. In order to inquire about a visa in plenty of time please contact the German embassy in your country of origin.
