Language and Profession (DeuFöV)

Since the beginning of 2017, the SIT in Tübingen and Reutlingen has been providing job-related courses in German for people with a migration background with the aim of reaching a language proficiency level of B2 or C1 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

These courses are offered by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) in accordance with the Ordinance on Job-Related German Language Training and are based directly on the integration courses. They are aimed at people who already have a good knowledge of German and who would like to improve their German in order to also improve their job prospects. The goal is integration into the labor market or into further education programs.

The national job-related German language training program consists of various modules which can be combined as required. At the moment there are three basic modules, each of which requires 300 or 400 teaching units: B2, C1 and C2.

At the SIT, we offer the two basic modules B2 und C1. The requirement for attending these courses is a language proficiency level of either B1 or B2. You can provide proof that you have attained this level either with a language certificate or by taking a placement test at the SIT.

The content of the language lessons is not only job-related but deals with general topics as well. They focus on learning German for the professional world, such as for example communicating with colleagues, customers and supervisors as well as writing professional emails and understanding instruction manuals. There is a test at the end of each module for which the student will receive a certificate (telc). This certificate will help all those who have completed the course with their professional career, can help them to receive credit for professional qualifications they have already received in their native country or enable them to attend the next module.

Requirements for attending these courses according to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees:

  • You must be registered as actively seeking work and/or as a rule be receiving welfare benefits in accordance with the German Social Security Act or unemployment benefits; you are looking for an apprenticeship training position, are already doing an apprenticeship or are presently undergoing the process of having your vocational or educational qualifications recognized.

  • You have a migration background and require further qualifications in the German language, i.e. you belong to one of the following groups:

    • Immigrants, including refugees, who are going through the recognition procedure and who have good prospects of permanent residence (at the moment this applies to those whose country of origin is Syria, Iran, Iraq, Eritrea or Somalia). This does not apply to refugees from safe countries of origin.
    • EU citizens,
    • Germans with a migration background.

  • You have already completed an integration course and/or already have reached the German language level of B1, B2 or C1 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

If you meet these requirements, you will be able to take the course free of charge.

Please talk to your placement officer at the employment agency or the job center in Tübingen. If you are already working, you can ask your employer, who will receive further information from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.

We are planning to offer further special modules as required: courses for people who are going through the recognition procedure, courses for various fields, for example for health care professionals or office employees or courses for those who have already completed an integration course and did not attain a B1 level (entry level A1 or A2).
